Die in the Ancient World

Dice games have been in existence for hundreds of years if not thousands. The origin of the dice is unclear since it is found all over the ancient world from the East to the West. A modern cubic die was in Egypt although the use for it is not known. The die could have been used for games but was more probably used as a tool of divination. The “Mahabharata”, an ancient Indian epic, contains the earliest record of dice games. It tells stories of ancient warriors playing dice games as early as 600B.C. Warriors of the Roman Empire are also known to have played dice games and even Roman Emperors like Augustine, Nero, and Caligula were said to be devoted players of dice games. Koreans were also known to have their own dice games which were very popular in their region. There are also records of dice games among American Indians wherein they used knucklebones to serve as their dice.
