Online Poker

Online poker is the game of poker played over the Internet which has been responsible for the dramatic increase in the number of poker players worldwide. This type of game is generally perceived as more player-friendly and less intimidating than traditional venues such as casinos. A player is able to participate in the comfort of his/her own home which makes participation convenient and controllable.

Online venues are cheaper than brick and mortar casinos largely due to the smaller overhead costs. The software is also able to prompt players to act when it is his/her turn to do so. Online poker rooms also allows players to play for stakes as low as 1¢ and even offer poker free rolls to attract beginners as there is no entry fee.

There are many other features of an online poker site that will certainly entice players. One of this is providing satellite tournaments where winners automatically gain entry into real-life poker tournaments. There are at least four players in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) final tables that won their entry through an online card room. Chris Moneymaker caused a shock in the poker world when he won the $ 2.5 million championship money through a $39.00 initial payment in an online poker site.

The legality of online poker would depend on individual regulations of participating countries. Its revenue earning capabilities are big and have become subject of debates and arguments. The question as to whether it is carried out with integrity and fairness has also come to fore. Operations of online poker sites have recognized that the game may be vulnerable to certain types of fraud. They are quick to point out however that there are fraud detection capabilities that exist in online gaming which cannot be found in conventional play.
