Evolution of Poker

Since its beginnings in the Mississippi riverboats, the popularity of poker has spread across the globe. Myriad variations have evolved along the way. Three poker variants have so far dominated the gambling world.

For over a century since the American Civil War, the five card draw game had risen to prominence. It was followed by the seven card stud game. Its reign commenced shortly before World War II and spanned forty years, thanks in due to the flourishing Nevada casino industry in the 50's and 60's. Texas Holden took over the crown in 1970. Today, it is the most popular variant of poker played.

In 1970, poker tournaments became the craze with the launch of the World Series of Poker. Prior to this, tournaments, be it neighborhood or national championships were held around the world. The World Series of Poker assured money and recognition to winners as the world's top poker players.

In 1971, casino goers were introduced to “poker-matic”, the automatic draw poker TV game. Afterwards, video poker made its entry in the casino scene in the early 80's. Video poker had its roots from the coin operated card machines developed in New York in 1891. As technology advanced, draw poker and other poker games were included.
