Betting Process

In most poker games, a player places an “ante” or “token bet” into the central pot before the cards are dealt. The “ante” can be any amount the players decide on before the game proper. After the “ante”, the players begin to bet into the central pot. Basically, when betting gets to a player (betting is done in a clockwise order, he (player A) has one of four choices. If he is the first player to bet, he can bet an amount within the betting limits. This amount goes to the central pot. If he decides to call, he bets an amount to equal the total amount of what has been bet. Say, if he bets 25 cents and player B raised the bet to 50 cents, he owes 25 cents. If he calls, he puts the amount owed in the pot and thus stays in the game. When he raises, he first bets enough to match what has already been bet by another player (calling). He then raises the bet for another amount (limits are set). For example, if another player bets 25 cents, he can call the 25 cents and raises another 25 cents for a total of 50 cents. If he folds, he does not put any more money into the pot. He drops out of the current hand and loses the chance to win the pot. The game ends when there are no more raises. The highest poker hand that has not folded wins the pot.
There are maximum bets and raises set. In fixed limit poker games, betting limits are structured by rounds. A $20/$30 indicates that initial bets and raises are $20 and succeeding bets and raises are set at $30. Pot limit poker games limit the maximum amount of raise or bet to the size of the pot. As the name suggests, no limit poker games have no limits on the bets and raises.
